BJP's Mukesh Dalal has become the first candidate to win the Lok Sabha elections unopposed in the last 12 years.  He is perhaps the first BJP candidate to win an unopposed parliamentary election.  This is the first victory of the Bharatiya Janata Party in the seven-phase Lok Sabha elections.  The Congress had nominated Nilesh Kumbhani as its candidate from the Surat Lok Sabha seat.  His candidacy was rejected a day earlier after the District Returning Officer found discrepancies in the signatures of the proposers at first sight.
He has been associated with the BJP since 1981 and has held various posts.  Mukesh has also worked in the BJP Youth Front.  BJP candidate Mukesh Dalal is the general secretary of Surat city BJP and a member of SDCA committee.  He is the Standing Committee Chairman of Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC).  He is the city executive member of BJP, 3 times councilor in Surat Municipal Corporation, 4 times standing committee chairman.  He has been the general secretary of the city BJP for the last three years.  He is also the Chairman of Surat People's Co-operative Bank.  He is considered to be a close and trusted confidant of BJP state president CR Patil.
