National desk:

Assam has become the first Indian state to constitute the 8th Pay Commission, which will revise salaries and pensions for its 700,000 employees and pensioners. The committee, headed by former Additional Chief Secretary Subhash Das, will submit its report within 18 months. While Assam is expediting the process, implementation is unlikely to be earlier than the central government. The revised salaries could potentially come in late 2027 or early 2028, although arrears could be paid retroactively from January 1, 2026.
