The central government has decided to celebrate Ayurveda Day every year on September 23. Ayurveda Day has been celebrated every year to promote Ayurveda as a scientific evidence-based and holistic medical system, but its date was not fixed. Ayurveda plays an important role in preventive health care and well-being. Till now Ayurveda Day was celebrated on the day of Dhanteras. Since Ayurveda is based on the Hindu calendar, its date on the English calendar used to change every year.

The AYUSH Ministry also noted that the date of Dhanteras would vary widely between October 15 and November 12 over the next decade, creating logistical challenges in holding events at the national and international levels. To overcome this inconsistency and establish a stable reference point for national and global celebrations, the AYUSH Ministry constituted a committee to examine suitable alternatives. The expert panel proposed four possible dates, of which September 23 emerged as the best option. The decision was based on both practical and symbolic considerations.
