The impact of Nipah virus is currently being felt in West Bengal. In a report published in Amar Ujala on January 13th, we reported that two health workers in Bengal had tested positive. According to media reports, three more people have now tested positive for Nipah, bringing the total number of infected people in West Bengal to five.

The two health workers who were previously found infected are still undergoing treatment in the ICU. Both are reported to be in critical condition. Health officials have tracked approximately 120 people who came into contact with these patients. They have been advised to remain in home isolation.

The increasing incidence of this infectious disease in West Bengal has alerted doctors. It is worth noting that both the infection rate and the risk of death from Nipah virus are high. 40-70% of infected patients die. Keeping these risks in mind, local residents have been advised to continue taking precautions.
