International desk:
Israel has formally recognized Somaliland, an autonomous region that seceded from Somalia decades ago, becoming the first country to do so. Located in northwestern Somalia, Somaliland has been in a long-standing conflict with the central government.
Somaliland declared its independence in 1991 amid a period of civil war and anarchy in Somalia. Since then, Somaliland has maintained peaceful and stable rule over most of its claimed territory, but it lacked international recognition.
The Somali government criticized Israel's move, calling it an "illegal step" and asserting that Somaliland is an integral and inseparable part of Somalia. Ali Omar, Somalia's Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, stated that the government would pursue all available diplomatic avenues to challenge the act.
