Liberal Party candidate Lee Jae-myung has won a big victory in the special presidential election held in South Korea on June 3, 2025. So far more than 85% of the votes have been counted and Lee has got a clear victory against his opponent Kim Moon-soo. Conservative leader Kim Moon-soo has also accepted his defeat.
This election has taken place after the extraordinary political crisis in which former President Yoon Suk Yol tried to impose martial law in December 2024, who later faced impeachment. Yoon declared martial law on December 3, 2024 in the middle of his five-year term, shocking not only South Korea but the whole world. This was the first time since the restoration of democracy in 1987 that a president had taken such a step.
