Justice B. R. Gavai was sworn in as the 52nd Chief Justice of India (CJI). He has become the first Buddhist and second Dalit Chief Justice of the country. Earlier, Justice K. G. Balakrishnan became the first CJI from the Dalit community. Justice Gavai was administered the oath by President Draupadi Murmu at a brief ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhavan. He took the oath in Hindi. He replaced Justice Sanjiv Khanna who retired on Tuesday on attaining the age of 65. Justice Gavai was elevated as a judge of the Supreme Court on May 24, 2019. His tenure will be over six months and he will hold office till November 23.
