Birsa Munda: Today the whole country is paying tribute to Birsa Munda on his birth anniversary. The torch of revolution lit by this great hero for the freedom and rights of tribals will continue to inspire generations for ages. The life of Birsa Munda is a great story of struggle for human freedom.
Birsa Munda was born on 15 November 1875, in Ulihatu village in Ranchi district of the then Bengal Presidency (now in Khunti district of Jharkhand) (although some sources state that he was born on 18 July 1872).
Birsa received his education in Salga under the guidance of his teacher Jaipal Nag. Later, he became a Christian to join a German mission school, but soon left his studies after discovering that the British wanted to convert the tribals to Christianity through education.
On 3 March 1900 the British succeeded in capturing Birsa. He was kept alone in jail and was not allowed to meet anyone for three months. It is said that he was brought out of the jail cell only for an hour a day. His health started deteriorating and he started vomiting blood. Birsa gave up his life on 9 June 1900.
After Birsa's death his movement ended. However, in 1908, the colonial government passed the Chhotanagpur Tenancy Act (CNT), which prohibited the transfer of tribal lands to non-tribals.
Jharkhand state was established on his birthday in 2000.
