Punjab-Haryana High Court's decision on dog bite

Amidst the increasing incidents of dog bites across the country, the Punjab and Haryana High Court has given a major decision.  The High Court has fixed compensation of up to Rs 20,000 for victims of dog bite incidents.  In case of dog bite, a compensation of Rs 10,000 will be given to the victims for each tooth mark of the dog.
 A bench of Justice Vinod S Bhardwaj said that in dog bite cases, victims will be given at least Rs 10,000 for each tooth mark of the dog.  In case of skin wound or loss of flesh due to dog bite, a minimum compensation of Rs 20,000 will be given for wound up to 0.2 cm.
 The High Court has given this decision in view of the hearing of 193 petitions regarding dog bites from Chandigarh, Punjab and Haryana.  Meanwhile, the court has directed states and union territories to form committees to register cases for dog bite incidents.  The High Court has said that the governments should take responsibility on priority basis and make rules on this.
