Blue Lagoon Resort Temporarily Closed: 'Blue Lagoon', one of the most popular destinations in Iceland, has been closed because about 1,400 earthquakes have occurred in 24 hours in the Reykjanes Peninsula.  This is a seismic swarm which has created the possibility of volcanic eruption.  The 'Blue Lagoon', a geothermal spa, was closed for a week last Thursday after a powerful earthquake struck just after midnight.  Then 800 mild earthquakes were felt.
A Blue Lagoon spokesperson said it took a 'proactive decision to temporarily close its operations for a week' due to the 'disruption' to guests on Wednesday night and the 'stress of long working hours on our staff'  .  He said in a statement, 'Blue Lagoon will closely monitor seismic activities in the coming days and reevaluate the situation accordingly.'
The Reykjanes Peninsula has been on alert in recent weeks after earthquake-related activity began on October 25, prompting Iceland's civil protection agency to issue a warning of 'uncertain phase'.  An alert level that is associated with an event that has already begun and may pose a potential threat to people, property, communities, or the environment.
