Indian Army soldier Gawate Akshay Laxman, posted in Siachen, Ladakh, is the first Agniveer to be martyred while deployed on the line of duty. Army's Leh-based Fire and Fury Corps said on Sunday that one Agniveer Laxman has been martyred while on duty in Siachen. The Army has condoled the demise of martyr Gawate Akshay Laxman and revealed how his family will receive an amount of over Rs 1 crore.
Gawate was posted at the Siachen Glacier, located at an altitude of about 20,000 feet in the Karakoram Range. This glacier is known as the highest altitude battlefield in the world where soldiers have to battle strong icy winds. This is the largest glacier in India and the second largest glacier in the world. Laxman died early on Saturday.
Regarding the compensation to be given to the martyr's family, the Army posted on X, 'Agniveer (Operator) Gavate Akshay Laxman sacrificed his life in the line of duty in Siachen. In this hour of grief, the Indian Army stands firmly with the bereaved family. In view of the conflicting messages on social media regarding financial assistance to the next of kin of the deceased, it is important to clarify that the emoluments received by the next of kin are governed by the relevant terms and conditions of service of the soldier.' As per the terms of appointment of Agniveers, the emoluments authorized for the martyr will be as follows:-
-The family members of martyr Laxman will get Rs 48 lakh as contributory insurance.
- Along with this, the martyr's family will also get an ex-gratia amount of Rs 44 lakh.
- Not only this, the martyr's family will also get an amount from the service fund (30 percent) contributed by Agniveer, which will also include an equal contribution by the government and interest on it.
Apart from this, the family members will also get the money for the remaining tenure till the completion of four years from the date of death and this amount will be more than Rs 13 lakh.
Apart from this, a contribution of Rs 8 lakh will be given to the families of the martyred soldiers from the Armed Forces War Casualty Fund.
