Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday suggested renaming the old Parliament House as 'Constitution House' after both the Houses were shifted to the new building.  He said that the dignity of a building where Parliament sessions have been held for the last 75 years should not be diminished by calling it an old building.  The Prime Minister said referring to the building as 'Constitution House' would be a tribute to the leaders who made history in Parliament.  "We must not miss the opportunity to give this gift to future generations," he said.

PM Modi was speaking at a function in the Central Hall of Parliament before shifting to the new building.  The change came on the second day of the five-day special session of Parliament on the occasion of Ganesh Chaturthi on Tuesday.  Referring to the old Parliament, Modi said, This building and also this Central Hall, is kind of full of our Bhavanas.  It both motivates us and motivates us to duty.  Before independence, this section was used as a kind of library.  After independence, the Constituent Assembly met here and after intensive discussions by the Constituent Assembly meetings, our Constitution took shape here.  It was here that the British government transferred power in  This Central Hall is a witness to that process.  It was in the Central Hall that our tricolor, the National Anthem, was adopted.
