“Our profession will continue to flourish or perish, depending on whether we maintain our integrity or not,” Chief Justice Justice DY Chandrachud said. The CJI said that truthfulness and honesty are the core of the legal profession. You can fool the whole world, but not your conscience.
The Chief Justice was speaking at an event on Sunday on the theme of enhancing cooperation between lawyers and judges towards strengthening the legal system. "Integrity is not erased by a storm, but by small concessions and compromises made by lawyers and judges," the CJI said. "Conscience asks us questions every night," the Chief Justice said. Lawyers gain respect when they respect judges and judges gain respect when they respect lawyers and there is mutual respect when it is realized that both are part of the same cycle of justice.
