Date: September 18, 2023. That is, today's date. Once again, the name of the country could be debated in Parliament. There is speculation that the government may propose a name associated with the country.
So will history repeat itself once again? And will what could not be done 74 years ago, be done today? Because when the Constituent Assembly debated, there were many members who said that the country should have the same name. And now once again, such a debate has started that when no other country in the world has two names, why should our country have two names?
HV Kamath of the All India Forward Bloc had introduced an amendment motion in the House 74 years ago to change the name of the country from India to Bharat or Bharatvarsh. However, the motion was rejected by 51 votes against and 38 in favour.
Dr. The debate on 18 September 1949, chaired by Rajendra Prasad, was the first time the name of the country was discussed in the Constituent Assembly. Ambedkar suggested two names, India and Bharat. During the debate, Kamath had said that every child is named after birth and soon India will be born too. There were many suggestions for the name of the country, including Hindustan, Hind, Bharatvarsh, Bharat and Bharatbhoomi.
When the Constituent Assembly met on 18 September 1949, HV Kamath, a member of the committee, was the first speaker. “This is the naming ceremony of the Republic of India. Kamath had said that if there was no need for a naming ceremony, we could have kept the name India but if we have reached the point where we have to have a new name, the question will certainly be what the name should be.
