Russia and Ukraine, hitherto fighting on the battlefield, will now face off in the world's largest court. The International Court of Justice (ICJ) is due to hear the Russia-Ukraine war on Monday. In fact, Ukraine raised the case at the ICJ on February 24 last year, just days after the Russian attack . Ukraine says Russia is making a mockery of international law by justifying the attack.
Russia has claimed that it decided to attack Ukraine to prevent genocide. Russia will now put its similar claim before the International Court of Justice.
On February 24 last year, Russian President Vladimir Putin declared war on Ukraine in what he described as a "special military operation." The two have been at war ever since. Russia claimed that there was genocide in Ukraine and that it was its responsibility to protect people from it.
Ukraine took the case to the International Court of Justice. Ukraine argues that Russia is abusing international law by saying that the attack was necessary to prevent alleged genocide in eastern Ukraine.
Russia has often accused Ukraine of committing genocide. Russia wants the international court to dismiss the case. The case is scheduled to be heard till September 27. Russia also says Ukraine is using the case to mislead to justify its military action.
