The Ashoka Pillar, which Prime Minister Narendra Modi mentioned at the inauguration of the G-20 summit, was installed by Emperor Ashoka 2,500 years ago in the village of Topra in Haryana's Yamunanagar district.  "Not far from here is the pillar, which contains the last inscription of Emperor Ashoka in natural language, in which he preaches peace to the entire world," the PM said.
The Ashoka Pillar from Topra was removed from here by Feroz Shah Tughlaq in the 14th century and taken to Delhi.  The 27-ton column was taken to Kotla, New Delhi, via the Yamuna River.  This was the time when Tughlaq was building the new city.  This pillar was then called Minar-e-Zareen.  which means the pillar of gold.  The Islamic text of the Tughlaq period gives the example that it was the brightest of all Ashoka pillars in Haryana.
