Himanta Biswa Sarma On Polygamy: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday (August 21) urged people to send their suggestions on his government's proposed law to ban polygamy in the state.  Earlier, on the occasion of Independence Day on August 15, the chief minister had said that a strict act would be introduced soon to end polygamy in the state.
The Chief Minister appealed for::: suggestions from the public on his social media platform 'X' (Twitter) handle and also shared an official notice for it.  The notice cites an expert committee report recommending that the Assam Assembly may enact legislation banning polygamy.
Not part of religion, having more than one wife::
According to the notice, Articles 25 and 26 give the right to profess religion and to listen to conscience.  However, these rights are not irrevocable.  The notice states.  "With regard to Islam, the courts have held that having more than one wife is not a compulsory part of the religion. A law limiting the number of wives does not interfere with the right to practice the religion and that within the scope of social welfare and reform.”
Article 25 does not violate the law::
"A law supporting one wife does not violate Article 25. Keeping these principles in mind, the Assam Assembly may enact legislation to abolish polygamy," the government notice said.

The committee was formed by the Assam government
Earlier, the Assam government had constituted a committee of experts on the matter.  The committee has submitted its report to Sarma.  The CM claimed that the committee had unanimously agreed that the state government could enact legislation to abolish polygamy from the state.
