During the debate on the National Capital Territory of Delhi Government (Amendment) Bill, 2023 in the Lok Sabha, Union Home Minister Amit Shah said there are provisions in the Constitution that allow the Center to make laws for Delhi. He attacked the Aam Aadmi Party, saying that in 2015, a party came to power in Delhi whose aim was only to fight, not to serve. The aim is not to acquire the right to do transfer postings, but to take over the vigilance department to hide corruption like building their own bungalows.’
The Union Cabinet had approved the National Capital Delhi Region Government (Amendment) Bill on May It was introduced on May 19 to replace the ordinance brought by the Centre. The Aam Aadmi Party, led by Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, has strongly opposed the ordinance. The Congress and other opposition parties are also against the ordinance.
During the discussion, the Home Minister said, ‘This ordinance refers to the Supreme Court order which says that Parliament has the power to legislate on any issue relating to the National Capital Territory of Delhi.’
“My request to all parties is not to support or oppose any party to win elections. There are many ways to form a new alliance. Bills and laws are brought for the good of the country so they should be opposed and supported for the good of Delhi,” he said.
